Famous for its monthly Independent Markets, Frome is best explored on foot in order to really appreciate and enjoy its unique character and charm. Only a few minutes drive from The Lighthouse, parking is very easy and gives good access to the town centre. Centrally located Cheap Street complete with a Leat (stream) running along its length, has a wonderful mix of shops, cafes and services and the cobbled hike up Catherine Hill is well worth the trip due to its range of trendy boutiques and craft shops.
Shows, Events and Things to do with Kids
Make the most of the monthly Frome Independent Market held on the first Sunday of each month and hosted throughout the town, showcasing the best independent art and crafts producers and food traders.
Parents looking for a fun day out with the kids will do well to explore the Frome Murder Mystery Treasure Trail, which leads the amateur detective on a self directed fun trail around the best of Frome. Treasure maps are available to purchase from Treasure Trail, which also offers mobile phone support to nudge any stuck detectives in the right direction.
Enjoy the nationally recognised 10 day Arts Festival in July, presented in various locations around the town, Frome Carnival late September and the annual Frome Cheese Show in the autumn. This impressive one day show includes horse jumping, livestock competitions, craft and country clothing stalls, local food tents and of course the star of the show, the Global Cheese Awards.
Arts, Crafts, Music and Theatre
The Black Swan Guild is a popular arts centre near the river open 7 days a week, which contains galleries, shops, a cafe and the Round Tower Gallery hosting artist-led workshops and community events. On the other side of town, situated in one of the best preserved former textile mills in the South West, The Silk Mill comprises of artist studios and event space that hosts a variety of exhibitions, musical and social events.
The town also hosts two thriving theatres, The Merlin Theatre and Frome Memorial Theatre, plus The Cheese and Grain, a multi-purpose venue hosting a variety of popular bands, fairs and markets.
